I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into the Warehouse to see the new musical written by local young artists Quinn Joseph (music) and Connor Joseph (book and lyrics). I liked the music immediately – the four...
From monalisa2 on Mike Delamont: Mama's Boy
I saw the Devil last year so when I saw the ad for this one -I knew I must see it. I was at the fri July 28 11pm performance ….wow…..it left me speechless! I could so relate to a lot of it . Addictions are always a family’s worse hidden secret & as the children of addictive parents –the shame is sometimes so overwhelming and the anger & the frustration…but like you said….we do not want pity from anyone…so we do keep it a secret. But we do survive and somehow this does make us stronger…but still never really understand the WHY they do it ……Bravo on your emotional show-you took us on a ride that many do not know or understand ….thank you!!
From Josh Wolf on Prophecy
REALLY great play. This is what fringe is all about
From Winnipeg Gal on The Ladies Guide to Deceit and Debauchery
Fashioned with a 1920s cabaret feel, the Winnipeg show only had a single performer. She was prevented by the Fringe/City from doing any tricks with fire. So if much of the show presented here was “filler”, this could be why I found it to be only mildly entertaining and not particularly “daring”.
From Winnipeg Gal on Uncomfortably Live featuring Paper Machetes
Paper Machetes rock out! If you’re a fan of prog rock – this show is for you. Towards the end I wondered where I could buy an EP (they provided a mailing list for information about how to get their recorded songs). Unfortunately for me, the acting performances in between didn’t measure up to the music.
From Winnipeg Gal on Project Ex
Mildly humorous narrative about unresolved questions surrounding three ex girlfriends. I felt as if this play was the actor/writer’s attempt to get closure. Clever use of audience participation. However, be forewarned – even though the cigarettes were “herbal” – the sheer amount of them smoked during the show were enough to set of my cigarette allergy.
From Winnipeg Gal on Leash Your Potential
Hilarious, ironic… and true! I’ve worked in the corporate world as long/longer than Ryan – and he nailed my workplace completely.
From Winnipeg Gal on Sound & Fury's "Doctor Whom"
Not nearly as funny as previous productions (and I’ve seen them ALL). Sound and Fury seem to deliver better when given a loose script from which to deviate, rather than total improv. But their dedication to comedy and my girlish crush on Richard keep me coming back to their shows. Looking forward to what they’ll have cooked up next year!
From Winnipeg Gal on Olive Copperbottom: A New Musical by Charles Dickens and Penny Ashton
Creative re-use of classic literary tropes, with clever dialogue punctuated by modern jabs. As much as I sometimes had trouble following the character transitions, I still enjoyed this one thoroughly. Penny Ashton is always a safe bet at Fringe.
From Josh Wolf on Guns Blazing
Didn’t. Laugh. Once.
From mikeyt on Speech & Debate
I enjoyed “The Three Beggars” production of Central Park West a couple years ago at the Winnipeg fringe, and they didn’t disappoint this time around with Speech and Debate. This is not an easy play to do well–there is a fine balance of laugh out loud moments and scenes of intense psychological depth. These young actors, under the direction of Margaret Fergusson, did a very admirable job of getting the balance right in this very entertaining production. If you have a chance to catch the final performance on July 30, you won’t be disappointed–overall a thoughtful and well-executed show with very impressive performances from the three main actors in their portrayal of the complexity of adolescence.
